1. Philosophy of life
The life equation
Results in life = way of thinking × enthusiasm × ability.
“Ability” refers to talent, intelligence, and capabilities developed through both innate qualities and experience.
“Enthusiasm” refers to effort, willingness, commitment, and other qualities that people can develop.
“Way of thinking” refers to philosophy, ideas, moral values, and one’s attitude toward life.
Ability and enthusiasm can each be considered on a scale from 0 to 100 and then multiplied. Compared with someone who regards themselves as highly capable, becomes complacent, and is unwilling to work, a person who considers their ability ordinary but works harder than anyone else with intense enthusiasm can achieve stronger results.
The way of thinking is the most important factor because it influences outcomes in life and work. It can move in either a positive or negative direction, from minus 100 to plus 100. When the three factors are multiplied, even a slightly negative way of thinking can produce a negative result.
Ability and enthusiasm matter, but what matters most is a sound way of thinking grounded in what is right for a human being.
Developing character
- Ask what is right as a human being. Inamori’s philosophy proposes judging whether something is right or wrong by asking whether it accords with basic ethics. The original article quotes his book Huofa (活法): “I have kept this as the most important standard in life and remained faithful to it throughout my life. It is the simplest standard, yet it is also a sound principle. If a business is managed according to this principle, there is no need for confusion: the organization can move forward along the right path and guide its work toward success.” People are easily influenced by their circumstances and may judge matters only by personal gain or loss, leading to moral decline, a loss of values, and more complicated relationships. A person should be honest, avoid deception and greed, refrain from burdening others, and treat people with kindness. These principles, taught by parents and teachers in childhood, should also guide business and everyday judgment. When facing a choice or feeling uncertain, ask: “What is the right thing to do as a human being?”
- Make an effort that is second to none. Study diligently, work harder than others, persevere, and keep refining the work. Instead of spending time complaining, take another step forward, however small, and continue striving to improve.
- Remain humble rather than proud. The Chinese saying “humility brings benefit” reflects the belief that a humble mind supports happiness and develops character, while pride can lead to complacency and failure. The original article treats talent as a gift from heaven and says that using it for the public good comes first, while using it for private benefit comes second; this is the essence of humility.
- Reflect every day. Review your thoughts and actions, concentrate, and face yourself honestly. Ask whether you have acted selfishly or timidly, settle an unsettled mind, reflect sincerely, and correct mistakes when they are found.
- Be grateful for being alive. Remember even the smallest help received from others. Being alive is itself a source of happiness, and gratitude is like groundwater that nourishes the foundations of one’s moral outlook. As long as one is alive, there is reason for gratitude.
- Do good and think of others. A family that accumulates good deeds will have blessings to spare. Treat people kindly and show care in words and actions; genuine goodness begins with what is truly beneficial to the other person.
- Do not remain trapped in emotional distress. Avoid constant worry, agitation, or resentment. Life inevitably brings difficulty and setbacks. Do not let them defeat you and do not run away; face them directly, remember the original purpose, and continue doing what should be done now.
2. Philosophy of work
Principles of work
- Work steadily and practically. As the saying goes, practical work builds a nation while empty talk holds it back. Only by completing each task carefully can the team meet customer needs and support UNISINO®’s continued development.
- Persevere. Life is ultimately built through the continued accumulation of individual moments. Work that appears ordinary can become an important foundation for a business when it is done steadily and persistently, and that sustained effort also gives life meaning. Continuing to do one thing well can turn the ordinary into something exceptional and give the team greater strength for the future.
- Practice craftsmanship. The original principle joins care for craft with continual self-improvement. Craftsmanship requires meticulous work, exacting standards, and attention to refinement. A good craftsperson keeps customer satisfaction in mind and develops the judgment needed to respond calmly and confidently when unexpected situations occur. The team must identify its strengths, return to fundamentals, do the right things, draw on internal motivation, cultivate itself with a focus approaching meditative practice, avoid undervaluing itself or being distracted by circumstances, and commit fully for the long term in order to create distinctive products and better versions of themselves.
- Act with integrity. Speak directly rather than maneuvering behind the scenes; uphold principles rather than smoothing over problems; express considered views rather than remaining silent for self-protection; and behave openly rather than saying one thing while doing another.
Working style
Work with enjoyment, efficiency, exceptional care, and extraordinary effort.
Growth through work
- Improve a little every day and continue doing so. Small gains accumulate over time. With persistence, constant drops can wear away stone, and gradual progress can move a person closer to the goal they seek.
- Plan, implement, check, summarize, and share. Work requires a defined process, and that process is “plan, implement, check, summarize, and share.” Following it helps the team turn effort into stronger results.
- Continue realizing personal value through work. Work is not merely a way to earn a living; it is also a place to develop character. Working steadily, caring about the work, and continuing to create value allows people to keep realizing their own value.
3. Employee code of conduct
- Cultivate virtue and pursue what is good. Develop mind and character, respect ethical conduct, and act with good intent.
- Keep learning and improving. As a rope can saw through wood and steady drops can wear through stone, daily study and accumulation will eventually produce results.
- Work diligently and practically. Be prepared to take on demanding work, participate proactively, and maintain a strong sense of commitment, responsibility, and team honor.
- Collaborate as a team. Members of an excellent team do not need a leader to remind them to give their full effort, because they understand what must be done and remind one another when an action does not support success. This willing contribution helps them hold one another accountable and accept responsibility.
- What constitutes an employee’s greatest good and good fortune? As the saying goes, “A person of character attends to the foundations; when the foundations are established, the way forward emerges.” An employee should continue growing, care for family, and make an effort that is second to none in their role. Become an active center of collaboration and work with the team to help the company grow into a great organization capable of making an important contribution to society, while aspiring to become a model of employee well-being in its industry and encouraging more companies to pursue well-being. Through doing great good, cultivating good fortune, and helping others fulfill themselves, seek a fulfilling life, family happiness, and career success while creating a stronger foundation for future generations.
4. Management code of conduct
Build sound working relationships
Managers must respect individual differences and consider situations from the employee’s perspective.
- Tell employees how the work is progressing.
- Recognize employees promptly when they perform well.
- Give advance notice of changes that affect employees.
- Create opportunities for employees to use their capabilities fully.
A method for solving workplace problems
A good leader enables employees to complete work willingly, at the desired time and by the desired method.
- Stage one, establish the facts: investigate everything that has happened, confirm the relevant rules and established practices, and understand the person’s views and feelings.
- Stage two, consider the decision carefully: organize all facts, analyze how they relate, confirm relevant policies, and consider the effect on the objective, the individual, and other people in the workplace. Do not rush to a conclusion.
- Stage three, take action: decide whether to handle the matter personally, identify who should assist, determine whether it should be reported upward, choose the right timing, and do not avoid responsibility.
- Stage four, confirm the result: decide when and how often to follow up, check whether results, working attitudes, and relationships have improved, determine whether the action benefited the work, and finally confirm whether the objective was achieved.
Management by walking around
- Manufacturing begins at the workplace, and marketing begins with direct contact with customers.
- When a problem occurs, it cannot be solved at all by leaving the workplace and discussing theory only from an office.
- The workplace contains first-hand information, which is essential to solving problems. Visiting it consistently can reveal clues for solving problems and may also identify ways to improve production efficiency and product quality, along with insights related to new orders. This principle applies not only to manufacturing and sales, but to every department.
Lead by example
To earn support from employees and colleagues, managers must act first. No amount of eloquent language can bring people together without personal example. To ask others to act, a leader must first demonstrate the conduct through their own actions. Company leaders and UNISINO® managers should foster a culture of leading by example; each must become the center of the collaborative effort and actively bring colleagues along.
